You can assess most of a bag's quality in about two minutes without any specialist knowledge. This is the checklist we recommend using on any designer-inspired bag — in a shop, or on arrival from an online order.
The 8-point inspection checklist
| # | Check | Pass looks like | Fail looks like |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hardware weight | Cold to the touch, solid, noticeable heft for its size | Light, hollow, tinny; plating that looks sprayed on |
| 2 | Zip run | Glides end to end, teeth close evenly | Catches at corners, leaves gaps when shut |
| 3 | Stitch consistency | Even length and angle, no loose ends | Uneven spacing, threads pulled through, visible glue |
| 4 | Edge paint | Thin, even, slightly flexible | Thick, cracked, sticky, or flaking |
| 5 | Pattern alignment | Continuous across seams, centred on flaps | Cut off mid-motif, off-centre |
| 6 | Structure | Stands on its own, base sits flat | Slumps or twists when set down empty |
| 7 | Lining & pockets | Taut lining, aligned pockets, clean seams | Puckering, crooked pockets, raw seam edges |
| 8 | Smell | Leather or neutral | Strong chemical or plastic odour |
Red flags when buying online
- Only catalogue images. Stock photography tells you nothing about the unit you will receive.
- No material or dimension specs. Vagueness usually means the seller does not know either.
- No replies to specific questions. If sizing and material questions go unanswered before payment, they will go unanswered after.
- No stated returns policy. Read it before you order.
- Prices far below the tier. Full-grain leather and solid brass hardware have a floor cost; a price under it means something was substituted.
Making a bag last
- Store it stuffed with tissue so it keeps its shape, in the dust bag if it has one.
- Keep it away from prolonged direct sun, which fades canvas and dries leather.
- Rotate it — a bag used every single day wears out several times faster than one in rotation.
- Wipe hardware with a dry cloth; avoid chemical cleaners on plated finishes.
- Address a loose stitch early; it is a two-minute fix that prevents a seam failure.
